How I Love To Dance
Well that’s a very interesting question, I have been dancing Salsa sins 1996, and all I can say is I wish it was a lot longer. Some people in Salsa try to say that they have been dancing for less years or months than they actually have, Why? Because it makes them look as though they are good dancers for the length of time they have been dancing. I have sat in a room of people with a total of over 200 years dance experience and that’s just with five people and they made me realise that it’s not how good you dance but about how much fun you have.
I still enjoying teaching, and love it when students ask me how to do things, I like nothing better than to pass on my knowledge from taking lessons with other teachers.
I can’t wait to say that I have been dancing for 20 or 30 years and still enjoying it, how good would that make me feel. People often say to me, when I am dancing, I am always laughing and smiling, it’s because I am always enjoying it. I was once asked who are my favourite girl dancers and the guy who asked the question was surprised when I named 4 of my favourite dancers, because these people weren’t the greatest dancers but the most fun!
Dancing is supposed to be fun, fun, fun. an enjoyable experience, no spitefulness, or competition, bitchiness or back stabbing. So what, if that person over there dances better or worse, leave them to enjoy themselves, we all have to start somewhere and just because someone dances slightly different to what is “Fashionable” doesn’t make them a bad dancer. Myself, I don’t go out and just dance with the “good” girls, I actually prefer to dance with people who don’t want to just show off, I want to have an enjoyable dance, with someone who basically wants the same. I don’t care if they are a beginner or advanced dancer as long as the dance is enjoyable for both parties.
Dancing is changing all the time, I am influenced a lot by L.A street kids, I find it exciting and challenging, But I am not saying that it is any better than any other style, there is no style better than any other. I am going to be a bit controversial here, in my own opinion, apart from the technical execution of the move and the technical execution of the turn patterns I actually think that the way the cubans’ dance is probably one of the best salsa, the reason I choose to dance the style I do, is that it suits my body movement and dancing style. I am always learning and travel extensively to not only L.A but all over the world, to brush up on my style and technique. I think everyone should try and create their own style of dancing, it makes them unique and not just a clone of someone else.
By all means come to my lessons and I will teach you how I do things if you like what I do then copy me, but if you want to create your own style, then go for it!!
If you come to my class and learn at least something, it gives me great joy. If you learn and also have a lot fun it makes it even more worth while for me.
For me, the ultimate thing about dancing is the way the music makes me feel, as soon as I hear music, I can’t keep still, it take me over completely and I just want to get up and dance. I am sure that most of you out there feel the same way, let’s help to make our dance scene a lot more enjoyable and fun. If ever you see me out and about, please come over and say hi, we are all about having fun and enjoying dancing to the fullest!!!
That’s why we are called Simply Dance!!!!!
